These silver and amethyst earrings by Mexican master Antonio Pineda are absolutely stunning!
From the front they appear to be a simple bezel-set amethyst with a half-round surmount. But their complexity becomes apparent when viewed from the side: the bezel-set stone is open-backed but there is a gap and a reflecting shield behind it with the surmount linking through this gap. This complex construction gives the earrings added dimension and planes of light and shadow.
Antonio Pineda was one of the modernist masters of Mexican silver jewelry. Pineda began his career working for William Spratling and opened his own taller (studio) in 1941. A comprehensive exhibit of his work was shown at the Fowler Museum in Los Angeles and a monograph “Silver Seduction, The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda” produced in conjunction with the exhibit.
