Calvaire was founded in New York by Rachel C. Calish and Stella Aronson in the 1920s. They were importers of costume jewelry and most of their items were purchased in France except during WWII when they purchased American-made goods. It is unlikely they bought jewelry from one source since the designs vary widely in structure and design; there is no Calvaire "signature look." Calvaire items include beautifully made jewelry, hand-bags, and compacts; the jewelry is often made with sterling. Calvaire items are extremely rare in the collectible jewelry market
