Biography
Nanna Ditzel (1923 - 2005) was one of Denmark’s most accomplished contemporary designers and the first woman to design for the Georg Jensen Silversmithy. From 1942 to 1946, she studied at the School of Arts and Crafts, Copenhagen, where she specialized in furniture. She also studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Furniture School with its founder, Kaare Klint. In 1946 she married Jorgen Ditzel (1921 to 1961) and they established their own design studio. They subsequently engaged in the design of furniture as well as ceramics, enamels, glass and textiles. She began to create designs in silver for the Georg Jensen Silversmithy in 1954, concentrating mainly on jewelry.
Following Jorgen’s untimely death in 1961, Nanna Ditzel kept the studio going. From 1970 she maintained a design firm and showroom in London, where she displayed furniture, textiles, jewelry, and porcelain of her own design. Her work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Danish Museum of Decorative Art in Copenhagen, and the Louvre in Paris.
